Chronology

June 18, 1897 Kyoto Imperial University is established.
Establishment of three courses in mechanical engineering.
1942 Establishment of the aeronautical engineering course (7th chair was moved).
1947 Kyoto Imperial University is renamed Kyoto University.
1960 Establishment of the Department of Precision Mechanics.
1962 Establishment of the Department of Mechanical Engineering II.
1975 Reorganization --> Departments of Mechanical Engineering, Precision Mechanics, and Engineering Science
1994 To place greater emphasis on graduate studies, the School of Engineering Science (undergraduate) is established within the Faculty of Engineering, comprising a total of 7 departments—the above three departments plus the Depts. of Aeronautical Engineering, Metal Science & Technology, Metallurgy, and Nuclear Engineering.
Four departments are set up in the Graduate School of Engineering—Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Phisics and Mechanics, Precision Mechanics, and Applied Energy Engineering.
1998 The Graduate School of Informatics is established.
2005 As part of a reorganization, the Department of Mechanical Engineering becomes the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Science.
2012 Department of Mechanical Engineering and Science has moved to Katsura campus.
