June 18, 1897 | Kyoto Imperial University is established. Establishment of three courses in mechanical engineering. |

1942 | Establishment of the aeronautical engineering course (7th chair was moved). |
1947 | Kyoto Imperial University is renamed Kyoto University. |
1960 | Establishment of the Department of Precision Mechanics. |
1962 | Establishment of the Department of Mechanical Engineering II. |
1975 | Reorganization --> Departments of Mechanical Engineering, Precision Mechanics, and Engineering Science |
1994 | To place greater emphasis on graduate studies, the School of Engineering Science (undergraduate) is established within the Faculty of Engineering, comprising a total of 7 departments—the above three departments plus the Depts. of Aeronautical Engineering, Metal Science & Technology, Metallurgy, and Nuclear Engineering. Four departments are set up in the Graduate School of Engineering—Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Phisics and Mechanics, Precision Mechanics, and Applied Energy Engineering. |
1998 | The Graduate School of Informatics is established. |
2005 | As part of a reorganization, the Department of Mechanical Engineering becomes the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Science. |
2012 | Department of Mechanical Engineering and Science has moved to Katsura campus. |
